NYU Laboratory Allows 10,000 Animals to Die During Hurricane Sandy
Thousands of laboratory rodents died when Hurricane Sandy struck. Stored in New York University School of Medicine basement laboratories, they were left to drown as the storm waters rose.
John Pippin, M.D., PCRM’s director of academic affairs, wrote to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to ask that the university be investigated.
“The deaths of thousands of New York University School of Medicine’s research subjects strongly suggests that the university has not established an ‘adequate veterinary care’ program—all the more so in light of the advance notice of Hurricane Sandy’s impending arrival,” wrote Dr. Pippin.
