Pig Rescue
PCRM staffers jumped to the aid of nearly 200 five-month-old pigs headed for slaughter. The triple-deck livestock trailer transporting the animals from the Hanor factory farm in North Carolina to a slaughterhouse in Pennsylvania was abandoned by its driver in northeast Washington, D.C., on October 1. The severely stressed and dehydrated animals were taken to an animal sanctuary where PCRM staffers Andrew Breslin, Jennifer Drone, William Green, A.R. Hogan, Miyun Park, Steven Ragland, and Stephanie Sarkis all lent a hand with unloading the pigs, feeding them, and providing fresh water. The surviving 167 pigs are now permanent residents at three animal sanctuaries—PIGS, a sanctuary, in W. Va., Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Poolesville, Md., and Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, N.Y.—where they will live out the rest of their lives in peace.
