Roberta S. Gray, M.D.
Roberta S. Gray, M.D., is a pediatrician and a member of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting preventive medicine, especially better nutrition, and higher standards in research.
A native of North Carolina, Dr. Gray received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was the first medical student at that institution to decline participation in live animal labs. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology.
Dr. Gray completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City and served as chief resident there. She subsequently pursued fellowships in pediatric endocrinology and pediatric nephrology at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Dr. Gray has held academic pediatric faculty positions at Duke University, Marshall University, East Carolina University, and Carolinas Medical Center. Her professional interests include medical student and resident education and the initiation and development of comprehensive pediatric nephrology clinical programs with dialysis and transplantation. She has served as academic vice chairman and residency training director at two universities. Dr. Gray has received numerous teaching and clinical service awards at the universities where she has taught and practiced.
As a longtime vegetarian, Dr. Gray has, over her years in practice, promoted the health benefits of a plant-based diet to all of her patients with chronic kidney conditions.
Dr. Gray left her academic position at the Carolinas Medical Center in 2005 to devote time to her lifelong passion of advocacy for animals. She currently does part-time private consulting and works with multiple organizations to promote animal welfare legislation and the development of humane education in schools.
Dr. Gray lives with her husband in South Carolina where they grow their own food from a garden on their small farm, maintain a wildlife preserve, and care for special needs animals. Her hobbies include bird-watching, hiking, bicycling, and gardening.
