Chimpanzee in cage.

Dear PCRM supporter,

For the last several years, PCRM has been working to end chimpanzee experimentation. Finally, we have begun to see some positive momentum on Capitol Hill. The Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works held a hearing on the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act last month, and we are expecting them to vote the bill out of committee soon.

Let me be clear: We would never have gotten this far without your help. Your e-mails, letters, and phone calls keep Congress informed and let them know that their constituents care deeply about this issue.

We need to keep the pressure on. As the bill gets closer to passage, we have heard from congressional staff that labs that experiment on chimpanzees are ramping up their efforts to defeat the bill, and we need you to remind your senator of the facts. As a physician, you are particularly important to this discussion.

Please send a personalized letter and urge your senators to support this important bill.

You can use the following talking points, but please personalize the letter as much as possible.

  • As a resident of , I am writing to urge you to support S. 810, the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act.
  • Nearly 1,000 chimpanzees are currently suffering in U.S. labs, wasting taxpayer dollars on ineffective medical research.
  • The Institute of Medicine recently issued a report in which they could not identify a single area of research for which chimpanzees are necessary.
  • Passage of this bill would save taxpayers around $250 million over 10 years. This money which could be spent on more effective research that would actually help my patients.
  • Please co-sponsor S.810, the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. It makes sense scientifically, financially, and morally.

Also, if you are affiliated with a local medical center or university, please mention that in your letter.

Together, we can make sanctuary a reality for chimpanzees currently suffering in laboratories. Thank you for all of your help.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Kucinich
