Dear [insert name], As a concerned individual, I request an end to the use of animals in the “Blood and Guts” course at the Virginia Governor’s School and urge you to use modern and humane dissection alternatives in this year’s class. Not only is dissection academically unnecessary, but the young people enrolled in this course are learning indifference and cruelty toward animals. Pictures from last year’s course showed students making a mockery of animal life. The activities occurring in this course contradict one of the central ideas of medicine: to respect and save lives, not destroy them. Numerous state-of-the-art alternatives are quickly replacing animals in the classroom, and empirical studies have repeatedly shown that students using dissection alternatives learn scientific lessons as well as or better than students using animal dissection models. Many of these alternatives, including three-dimensional and plastinated models, still provide a “hands-on” experience. These tools, combined with high-tech computerized dissection programs, provide a superior teaching method. There is no longer any justification for killing animals in the name of education.
