About PCRM

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit organization working toward compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion. For the last 26 years, PCRM has led the way for reforms of federal nutrition policies, and our clinical research programs are breaking new ground in diabetes, cancer, and other serious medical conditions. We have fought for an emphasis on prevention, higher ethical standards in research, and scientific advances in basic research and effective drug development. Over the years, we have taken on battles to end ethically questionable experiments involving children and inhumane animal experiments and have worked to improve science education. We have worked with physicians, federal regulators, politicians, researchers, educators, students, and concerned citizens. And we have so much more work to do.

Research Fellowship with PCRM

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is seeking candidates with expertise in life sciences for its Research Fellowship program. Fellows will promote alternatives to animal experiments by reviewing animal models in diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, cardiovascular disease, or other fields. The findings will ultimately be used to advocate for public policy changes that end the use of animal models for research on chronic diseases and call for more funding to be allocated to clinical research and other research methods that are not based on animal models. Fellows are expected to publish and present their findings in scientific and lay venues.

Taking advantage of PCRM’s Washington, D.C., location, fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of scientific and policy-oriented endeavors, including assisting with clinical research studies and our plant-based nutrition programs, congressional lobbying, interacting with government agencies, writing editorials, and public outreach. Fellows will gain project management experience in accordance with the responsibilities they assume.

Fellows will work in a collaborative atmosphere with other fellows and PCRM’s experts in medicine, clinical research, nutrition, toxicology, research policy, and other fields. Selected fellows may be considered for full-time employment at the conclusion of the fellowship.

Eligibility

  • Candidates should have experience with genetics, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, physiology, or pharmacology. Research experience in diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, or cardiovascular disease is particularly helpful.
  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree by their start date. Applicants with post-doctoral experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Successful applicants will possess:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work independently
    • Goal-oriented, self-motivated work ethic
    • Ability to maintain a sense of urgency, efficiency, and flexibility
    • Strong interest in animal welfare
    • Strong desire to promote alternatives to the use of animals in biomedical research
    • Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, and meetings.

Award amount: The program provides a $55,000 yearly stipend as well as a comprehensive benefits package. In addition, fellows will have access to funds at PCRM’s discretion to cover travel to scientific meetings or to use for other professional development opportunities or materials.

Application deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Terms: Full-time in PCRM’s Washington, D.C., office in the Metro-accessible Friendship Heights section of northwest Washington, D.C., for one year with the potential for continuation to full-time employment.

How to apply: Please mail, fax, or e-mail (preferred) a cover letter and your C.V. to:
