Manager of Research Policy

The Manager of Research Policy will work under the supervision of the Director of Research Policy to lead and coordinate the department’s campaigns and initiatives to replace the use of animals in research, education, and training programs.

Primary Areas of Responsibility and Specific Duties

  • Project Planning and Implementation
    • Conduct background research relating to existing and new campaigns, initiatives, and publications
    • Develop and execute strategic plans in conjunction with the Director of Research Policy
    • Develop and implement short- and long-range project objectives
    • Ensure deadlines are met by department staff and evaluate benchmarks and effectiveness of programs
    • Identify opportunities to submit papers and present at conferences and coordinate related logistics
    • Work directly with communications, development, publications, government relations, and public outreach departments to implement initiatives
    • Assess the need for and coordinate the development of program materials including brochures, merchandise, and Web content
    • Advance the awareness of the problems related to use of animals in research, education, and training programs, and educate the public on alternatives to the use of animals in these areas
    • Attend networking meetings and develop collaborative relationships with other like-minded entities
    • Coordinate outreach events
  • Supervision of Staff
    • Effectively lead, manage, motivate, and develop research policy staff
    • Strategically assess departmental staffing needs and fill open positions, including preparing job descriptions, reviewing applicant resumes, conducting interviews, and making hiring decisions in conjunction with the human resources department
    • Conduct three month performance evaluations and annual professional development reviews for all department staff
    • Encourage, identify, and approve professional development opportunities for department staff
    • Review supervisees' timesheets for accuracy and approve requests for time off
    • Resolve personnel issues
  • Meetings
    • Help conduct weekly department meeting with research policy staff
    • Participate in weekly department meeting with Director of Research Policy
    • Participate in biweekly all-staff meetings and provide departmental update
  • Fiscal and Reporting Responsibilities
    • Review and sign Check Request Forms
    • Review and sign vendor contracts for department-related services
    • Help develop and adhere to a department budget and approve department-related expenses in conjunction with Director of Research Policy
    • Prepare weekly departmental project status report for Director of Research Policy and President
  • Other
    • Maintain standard operating procedures for primary areas of responsibility
    • Other duties as needed or assigned

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree required; business or master’s degree preferred
    • Some scientific expertise is preferred
  • Experience
    • At least five years successful and applicable work experience in business, public relations, public health administration, or nonprofit administration at a management level
  • Skills
    • Proven leadership and management skills
    • Excellent communication skills; experience with media relations a plus
    • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
    • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision
    • Consistent ability to set priorities and deliver in a fast-paced environment
  • Other Requirements
    • Interest in ethics and effectiveness in research and the overall objectives of PCRM
    • Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, training, meetings, etc.
    • Interest in developing new competencies as needed for the responsibilities of the position
    • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends

Terms of employment: Full-time in PCRM’s Washington, D.C., office (Friendship Heights neighborhood/metro)
