Dietitian

PCRM’s dietetic professionals promote preventive medicine and healthy vegetarian/vegan eating styles in educational programs, media interviews, and in campaigns to educate the public. They also participate in nutrition research and literature reviews to elucidate the role of vegetarian/vegan diets in health and preventive medicine.

Primary Areas of Responsibility and Specific Duties:

Clinical Research Activities-

  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Assist with developing research protocols and writing grant and Institutional Review Board proposals
  • Assist with implementation of clinical research as directed by Clinical Research Coordinator, including interacting with study participants, data collection, nutrient analysis, and data coding and checking

Nutrition Education and Outreach Activities-

  • Advocate vegan diets to the federal government, nonprofit health organizations, physicians, the food industry, schools, the general public and other entities as appropriate, through writing, speaking, development of and participation in advertising campaigns, media relations, and other means
  • Respond to nutrition education questions from the public
  • Table at dietetic, health, and medical conferences
  • Give nutrition lectures and cooking demonstrations on an as-needed basis
  • Develop, revise, and keep current PCRM’s nutrition education materials on all of PCRM’s nutrition-related Web sites and in printed materials

Media Activities-

  • Work with the Communications department and Nutrition department to develop and publicize “quick hits”
  • Develop skills as a media spokesperson
  • Conduct media interviews
  • Approve and sign media relations communications, including letters to the editor, press releases, and op-eds
  • Participate in other media relations activities as needed by the Communications department

Continuing Education-

  • Stay current on issues of relevance through taking continuing education courses, membership and involvement in the American Dietetic Association, read journals, and attend relevant conferences

Other-

  • Maintain standard operating procedures for primary areas of responsibility
  • Other duties as needed or assigned

Required Education, Experience & Skills:

Required Education-

  • A minimum of a Bachelors of Science in nutrition; Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, or a related field, or Registered Dietician preferred
  • Knowledge of general and vegetarian/vegan nutrition

Required Experience-

  • Clinical research experience desired
  • Teaching and media interview experience desired

Required Skills-

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to articulate and advocate PCRM’s mission and summarize key issues and activities
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects with multiple staffers, prioritize, work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and follow projects through to completion in a very fast-paced environment
  • Creative thinker with strong organizational and planning skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to inspire confidence in class participants and other health care professionals
  • Ability to develop solutions to any identified problems
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to make sound judgments
  • Professional skills, demeanor, and work ethic
  • Ability to maintain a sense of urgency, efficiency, and flexibility
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite

Other-

  • Because this position requires the ability to persuasively and knowledgeably advocate PCRM’s position on vegetarian and vegan diets, it is required that the incumbent follow a vegan or vegetarian diet
  • Enthusiasm for PCRM’s mission
  • Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, training, meetings, etc.
  • Interest in developing new competencies as needed for the responsibilities of the position
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed

Terms of employment: Full-time in PCRM’s Washington, D.C., office (Friendship Heights neighborhood/metro)
