Communications Director

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is seeking a Communications Director to oversee its media relations and other communications programs, including its Web sites. The Communications Director leads approximately seven employees, is part of PCRM’s senior management team, and reports to the Executive Director.

Primary Areas of Responsibility and Specific Duties:

Media Relations

  • Manages communications department
  • Locates and media-trains appropriate PCRM spokespeople, including physicians, scientists, dietitians, and other experts
  • Writes or reviews and edits all publicity-related materials, including news releases, public service announcements, and reports, to ensure that they are well-organized, well-written, effective, and consistent with PCRM’s message
  • Oversees PCRM’s letters to the editor program
  • Oversees PCRM’s writing and distribution of op-eds and other opinion pieces
  • Maintains and nurtures relationships with journalists, PR colleagues, and PCRM spokespeople
  • Pitches stories to journalists and responds to incoming requests from journalists; books interviews; and sends appropriate background information
  • Organizes media tours
  • Plans news events

Other Communications Programs

  • Oversees the development and distribution of public service announcements
  • Develops ideas for campaigns, studies, reviews, reports, and other communications tools that will help advance vegetarian diets and alternatives to the use of animals in medical research and education
  • Develops programs, plans, and strategies to continually increase PCRM’s visibility and advance its mission
  • Oversees ad development and placement
  • Oversees production and provides content for PCRM e-newsletters, PCRM’s quarterly magazine Good Medicine, and other communications tools.

Web Site Content

  • Oversees content for PCRM’s various Web sites
  • Works with Web staff to enhance the use of PCRM’s Web sites as communications tools.

Strategic Planning

  • Regularly reviews existing communications tools and practices and looks for ways to improve them
  • Follows trends in PCRM’s target industries; monitors economic, cultural, and health developments that impact our work
  • Helps senior leadership envision and develop long-term strategic plans to grow the organization and achieve program goals
  • Helps steer department managers toward effective campaigns
  • Develops successful strategies for branding PCRM’s various products and organizations

Other

  • Leads and develops a team of approximately seven professionals
  • Oversees standard responses to general nutrition and research correspondence

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:

Education and Experience

  • A degree in a related field is required
  • Extensive experience in public relations, journalism, marketing communications, and advertising
  • Experience leading a team of professionals

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and summarize key issues and activities
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions
  • Professional skills, demeanor, and work ethic
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to professionally advocate PCRM’s positions on issues
  • Must maintain a sense of urgency, efficiency, and flexibility

Other

  • Because this position requires the ability to persuasively and knowledgeably advocate PCRM’s position on vegetarian and vegan diets, it is required that the incumbent follow a vegan or vegetarian diet
  • Creativity
  • Enthusiasm for PCRM’s mission and objectives
  • Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, training, meetings, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed

Terms of employment: Full-time in PCRM’s Washington, D.C., office (Friendship Heights neighborhood)
