Internship Profile: Annie Halsey, Clinical Research Intern

Annie Halsey"PCRM is responsible for much of my nutrition education and continues to be a significant influence to me today as a recent medical school graduate. I decided to intern with PCRM’s nutrition department after hearing Dr. Neal Barnard speak at the London School of Economics, where I was earning my master’s degree. Five years later, after earning my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from A.T. Still University, I found myself once again interning with PCRM, this time with the clinical research team. During my three months as the Clinical Research Intern, I was involved in several different projects, including a technical systematic review of the relationship between diet and migraine and speaking with clinical study participants about adopting a low-fat plant-based diet. While working on these projects, I gained valuable experience interacting with patients in a clinical setting. The most profound experience was my involvement in the clinical study on the impacts of a plant-based diet on diabetic neuropathy. It was inspiring to watch the transformations of the participants as they learned how they can use their diets to improve their conditions. I am excited to take what I have learned over the course of my internship with me as I begin my residency at Howard University Hospital. Throughout my medical career, I plan to make PCRM’s comprehensive nutrition resources available to my patients." - Annie Halsey, Nutrition Intern, Winter 2008 and Clinical Research Intern, Spring 2013
