The Physicians Committee visited Atlanta, GA in October 2016 to support a variety of educational events. Neal Barnard, M.D. presented at a community health talk on plant-based nutrition and chronic disease at Georgia State University.
Local doctors Neil Cooper, M.D., Karen Goodlett, M.D., Reginald Mason, M.D., and Jennifer Rooke, M.D., led a panel discussion for the community after the Forks Over Knives movie screening. Local success story, Benji Kurtz of Remedy Food Project, also provided insight on the panel. A resources guide was distributed at the events which encouraged locals to join a Plant Pure Pod community or discover Georgia-grown produce via Georgia Organics.
Attendees were invited to sign up for a free grocery store tour led a local registered dietitian, Ricia Taylor R.D., to identify healthy choices they could purchase throughout the 21 Day Vegan Kickstart in November 2016. Services like Happy Cow were recommended to find plant-based options while dining out.
Local Food for Life instructors Vince Rountree and Michele Vangilder R.N. then provided a series of free weekly nutrition and cooking classes at Morehouse School of Medicine. Community members involved in children’s nutrition initiatives gathered together after the Fruit and Veggie Festival at Atlanta Public Schools to engage in how to best improve school lunches.
Thank you Atlanta for coming together to kickstart your health!
